“TATLER’S BEST FOR SELF-BELIEF”
Discipline is for You Now. The concept of discipline is difficult for those growing up who knew it often led to punishment. I know what it meant to me.
Terror. I was always in trouble; there was always someone waiting to shout at me about what I had done wrong. I spent every weekend at school in detention; I was told I could paper the walls of the school hall with the number of blue slips (a sort of naughtiness ticket) I received.
I have a defiant nature and won’t accept things just because you say so. It has to make sense to me. I didn’t thrive at school. I found discipline suffocating and never in my favour. The way childish bits of my brain see it is - Discipline as a child was for them. Discipline as an adult is for me (you). That’s what’s made the difference to me as an adult. I remind myself when I don’t enjoy a task and can’t remember why I am doing it – THIS IS FOR YOU. It’s something I am doing for the future, so the road to making it happen is to have a strong relationship of like and trust with me of tomorrow.
I see many run and hide rather than redefine their relationship with discipline. It doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing concept. It can be separated from strictness. There is no need for punishment at the end if you miss. Just re-evaluation. Replace the judgement you remember from the discipline of yesterday with curiosity and say to yourself, ‘What now?’ Discipline is a commitment to anything more than nothing that makes tomorrow easier. How are you with the concept of discipline?
